The other main batteries that could be used for the same thing are much heavier. Lithium ion batteries high capacity is due to the material that they are made of. Lithium ion batteries do not suffer from a high discharge rate and are very practical for storing energy efficiently as well.

Some deluxe compacts are now shipping with the new Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries. These are longer lasting per charge than Ni-Cads with comparable self discharge rates. The Streetwise Small Fry series, among others, contain this newest premium battery pack.

Store the nickel and lithium based rechargeable battery at about half their charge. Storing them at full charge will drastically shorten their life. It depends on the specific battery type, but in general about half charged or 40% charged is good. Also, don't store lithium price that have no charge. If it is down to 0, charge it a little bit before you store it.
